Our Field Trip to Foodshare
To celebrate the end of our "Human Organ Systems" unit, the grade 5's embarked on a field trip to Foodshare. It was a great opportunity to further develop an understanding of the importance of proper nutrition and exercise to the healthy functioning of organ systems. What I liked about Foodshare is that it also offered links to Media Literacy. Our visit there started with showing the grade 5's part of logos (such as Cadbury, Burger King, McDonald's, etc.) and seeing whether the grade 5's could successfully identify the logos. Next, the grade 5's were shown pictures of food such as celery root, kale, red cabbage, and were also asked to identify these foods. This was a harder task than the former! This activity further sparked discussion on the advertisement of certain foods in our society. As the day progressed, the grade 5's were put into groups and asked to create their own salad based on certain requirements (e.g. designing a salad using ingredients that are locally produced). They tasted many things they had never eaten before, such as seaweed and sun dried tomatoes! I was very pleased with everyone who took the risk to try something new! Before eating our salads, we also made our very own home-made salad dressing using natural sweeteners! The salads were delicious and mouth-savouring! Bon appetit to all!
